By Mike Johnson of the Journal Sentinel
About 30 people were displaced after a fire broke out about 3:45 a.m. Monday in an apartment building in the 4500 block of S. Whitnall Ave. in St. Francis.
When firefighters arrived they saw extensive flames in the area of the building's south-side balconies extending up to the attic, fire Capt. Larry Passafaro said.
A section of the roof was lost to the fire, Passafaro said.
About 40 firefighters from a dozen communities battled the three-alarm fire, which was brought under control about 7 a.m., Passafaro said.
No one was injured.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The three-story apartment building is near E. Layton Ave. and I-794. The building is north of Mitchell International Airport.
