A small plane crashed Monday evening in the Racine County village of Mount Pleasant, killing the pilot.
The Federal Aviation Administration reports that the plane went down around 6:30 p.m. Monday about 2 1/2 miles south of the airport in Racine.
FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said one person was aboard the plane and was killed. She didn't have additional details.
Flight for Life initially was called to the scene, but the South Shore Fire Department battalion chief canceled the request before the helicopter arrived.
The Racine County medical examiner pronounced the pilot dead at the scene.
The plane came to rest in a farm field. The crash did not cause a fire but firefighters sprayed foam on spilled aviation fuel. The aircraft remained mostly intact with the fuselage in the rear of the plane breaking open. Debris littered the farm field near the crash site.
The single-engine Socata TBM 700, which normally seats six or seven passengers, was registered to Green Plane LLC in Wisconsin Dells. There was no business listing for Green Plane LLC; a man who answered the phone at Baraboo Dells Airport said the aircraft belonged to one person. The turbo prop plane was manufactured in 2010.
Law enforcement officers from Mount Pleasant, Sturtevant, the Racine County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol were called to handle large numbers of onlookers, according to scanner reports.
According to David Mann, general manager of Batten International Airport in Racine, the plane was heading to Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee when it either lost power or was losing power and, as a result, was heading to Batten to make an emergency landing, the Journal Times reported.
Calls to the Racine County sheriff's department were directed to a Mount Pleasant police spokesman who didn't return messages.
