Four rescued from fire above Cudahy print shop
By Jesse Garza of the Journal Sentinel
Cudahy — A four-alarm fire above a downtown print shop late Tuesday sent four people to the hospital with smoke inhalation, a Cudahy fire official said.
Fire Chief Dan Mayer said the fire was reported shortly before 10 p.m. on the second floor above Tiprint Inc., a print shop on the 4700 block of S. Packard Ave.
Firefighters rescued four people who were trapped inside of the building, one of whom guided them to her location by phone, Mayer said.
The building did not appear to have working smoke detectors and the outcome could have been much worse, Mayer said.
"If the occupants had been sleeping, they might not have become aware of the fire," Mayer said.
The origin of the fire might have been a candle, Mayer said.
No damage estimate was available late Tuesday.
Firefighters from other communities were called in as a precaution because of the rescue operation and because the fire could have easily spread to other buildings, Mayer said.
"This was in case it didn't go as well as we would have wanted it to go," Mayer said.
