Narrative: At 2119 hours the City of Racine 911 Center received a report of smoke in the area of 2306 Kinzie Avenue near the West Racine area of town. The initial caller reported smoke coming from the building next door. At 2120 hours a full fire suppression assignment was dispatched to this call and included Engine 6, Engine 1, Quint 7, Rescue 7, and a Command Car. During the dispatch of fire apparatus the address was updated to 2314 Kinzie Avenue. The first arriving unit was Quint 7 at 2124 hours. Quint 7 reported smoke showing and they would be advancing hose lines to the second floor of the structure. Several occupants of the home had fled as the fire department arrived on scene. As Quint 7 opened the door to the second floor apartment they were immediately pushed back down the staircase by extreme heat, fire, and heavy smoke conditions after attempting to enter the apartment under the protection of two hose lines. At about the same time reports were received by fire fighters on scene there may be someone still in the apartment on the second floor. The Battalion Chief immediately requested additional assistance from Ladder Truck 1, Engine 9, and Paramedic Rescue Squad 1 due to the potential for fire victims. Heavy fire and smoke quickly engulfed the southwest bedroom and living room on the second floor as fire fighters battled their way into the apartment. Fire quickly spread throughout the apartment and entered the attic space of the home. Fire Fighting crews continued an aggressive fire suppression attack searching for the missing victim. The fire victim was located in the Southwest corner bedroom on the second floor and was quickly determined to be deceased. As fire fighters continued to address spot fires throughout the second and third floors Fire and Police Investigators were contacted.
The fire was knocked down by 2150 hours and overhaul of the building continued into the early morning hours.
Several individuals successfully escaped the rapidly moving fire. In addition family pets were rescued by their owner prior to exiting the building during the fire. Smoke detectors were located in the apartment and reportedly sounding due to the smoke.
The Fire Department strongly encourages everyone to quickly evaculate any building where smoke or fire is showing. Under no circumstances should you ever reenter a building with smoke or fire to rescue pets or valuables since there is an exceptionally high risk that a fast moving fire will overcome you and possibly cause unconscienceness or death. Several working smoke detectors in a home is a very inexpensive way of receiving an early warning of smoke and.or a fire.
At this time the fire remains under investigation and no cause has been determined. The name of the fire victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
