Cudahy's Layton Garden Restaurant declared total loss after fire

Cudahy - Losses from a blaze that destroyed a landmark restaurant will exceed $750,000, the Cudahy Fire Department said Tuesday.
The fire at Layton Garden Restaurant and Lounge, 3107 E. Layton Ave., was reported about 8:40 p.m. Monday and was battled by a dozen fire departments. The restaurant, formerly Selen's House of Prime Rib, is considered a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Police Department, the state Division of Criminal Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to police.
The property has been owned since November 2006 by Peter and Eugenia Agnos of Brookfield and has an assessed value of $659,200, city records show.
It also contained personal property, such as machinery and equipment, with an assessed value of $185,400, the records show.
The building was constructed in 1946, the records show.
Peter Agnos, a former Milwaukee County supervisor, opened Layton Garden in September.
